ATLANTA, Ga. — The giant pandas have arrived at Zoo Atlanta.

Channel 2 Action News has confirmed that Ping Ping, a male, and Fu Shuang, a female, made the trip safely from China to Atlanta.

On Channel 2 Action News Sunday AM, we followed Fu Shuang and Ping Ping as they left Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and arrived at their new home at Zoo Atlanta.

For now, they will be housed in a biosecure panda complex for a quarantine period, which will last about a month, as they get used to their new home.

Once that period is over, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang will be ready for their public debut. There is no word from zoo officials on when that will be.

They are the fifth and sixth pandas to come to the U.S. since all of the pandas previously returned to China. Zoo Atlanta is one of three zoos nationwide to house pandas.

Ping Ping and Fu Shuang were born at China’s Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in 2020. Fu Shuang celebrates a birthday just weeks from now.

Ping Ping’s name is part of one given to him and his twin brother representing a blessing for a smooth and healthy life. Fu Shuang’s name comes from “Fu Lu,” a reference to her and her mother, meaning happiness.

Zoo Atlanta’s original giant panda agreement with China began in 1999 with the arrival of Yang Yang and Lun Lun. The pair quickly became two of the zoo’s most popular residents and helped make Atlanta one of the nation’s leading panda destinations.

From 2006 through 2016, Yang Yang and Lun Lun produced seven cubs, including two sets of twins. Their growing family attracted visitors from around the world and generated excitement with every new birth.

Yang Yang and Lun Lun, along with their two youngest cubs, returned to China in October 2024, ending Zoo Atlanta’s giant panda era and leaving the zoo without pandas for the first time in decades.
