A powerful and rare fall nor’easter brought flooding and power outages to New England this weekend.
A flood watch remains in effect through Monday for the eastern half of Massachusetts as rain is set to persist, according to the National Weather Service.
Coastal communities have already felt the storm’s particularly punishing force. Wellfleet, Massachusetts, and Block Island, Rhode Island, both recorded wind gusts of over 70 mph during the height of the storm, according to the weather service.

Rain pounded eastern Massachusetts, with National Weather Service data reporting by 8 a.m. Monday over 7 inches of rain on Joint Base Cape Cod and in Acushnet in southern Bristol County. Boston recorded over 2 inches of rain.
Well over 100,000 customers were without power across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic at times on Sunday, according to PowerOutage.us. The most widespread outages were in counties along the coast from New Jersey to Connecticut. Only around 1,600 customers remained without power in Massachusetts by 8 a.m. Monday morning.
Scituate reported significant coastal flooding, as waves pounded the coast, washed up over seawalls and coated coastal homes in salt water. A mass of sea foam bubbled up into roads along the shore.
The storm has been linked to at least one death in New York City, when a tree fell killed a city Housing Authority worker on Saturday.

Numerous flights were canceled or delayed up and down the coast. More than 250 flights were canceled at Boston Logan International Airport late Sunday morning as wind gusts reached 40 mph, according to the Massachusetts Port Authority.
