Iran’s foreign minister warned of renewed fighting after Trump rejected a proposal to reopen Hormuz

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told NBC on Sunday that Iran is “fully prepared for the war to be resumed.” He argued that Washington has failed to deliver on its earlier promises of a quick win. “We stand firm in the face of any new aggression, even if it comes to a doomsday war,” Araghchi said. “It is up to President Trump to choose.”

Donald Trump turned down the peace deal a day earlier. He said Tehran is seeking terms only because it is “losing so badly.” Still, he left the door open to talks. “I’d like to make a deal too,” he said. “But that deal would not be acceptable.” Under the plan, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States, in turn, would lift its blockade of Iranian ports and ease sanctions on the country’s oil exports. Iran also asked for the release of roughly $12 billion in frozen assets and a ceasefire across the region, including Yemen and Lebanon. Similar concessions were made in a June memorandum of understanding between the two governments. That agreement later collapsed.

Trump’s rhetoric last week at the U.N. General Assembly was one of the latest examples on how dealings are going. He vowed to “annihilate” Iran. Delegates left the hall in protest, among them members of the Iranian delegation. Yet, negotiators kept talking. Reports claim envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner sat down with Iranian officials for three hours on the assembly’s sidelines, and Trump sounded upbeat about a peace deal afterward.

Now, with midterm elections looming, there is little sign that Trump is hurrying toward a settlement. Iran, meanwhile, insists it negotiates from strength.
