Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is making an extraordinary direct appeal to American voters ahead of the November midterm elections, urging them to reject President Donald Trump and “take back control” of their government.
In a 25-page open letter addressed to the American people, the powerful Iranian military organization accused Trump of misleading Americans about the war with Iran, the country’s nuclear program and the battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz.
The letter urged Americans to “wake up” and argued that U.S. voters have the power to change their government at the ballot box.
“You are the ones who empower, with your votes, the government and allow it to do what it does,” the letter says, according to published excerpts.
“Although American politicians often win your votes through deception and false promises, as Trump did, you can change the makeup of the government,” it says.
The IRGC then delivers its bluntest political appeal: “Take back control.”
The letter, released Tuesday, comes just five weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections, when voters will determine control of the House and Senate.
Iranian officials made clear the message was intended to reach ordinary Americans rather than simply the Trump administration.
IRGC spokesman Gen. Hossein Mohebbi said the American public is unaware of what he described as the reality of Trump’s policies and urged Americans to pressure their government.
“If they were aware of these realities, they would definitely think differently and take other decisions,” Mohebbi said, according to Reuters.
The letter portrays Iran and the United States as victims of their respective political leaderships, declaring that “the nations of Iran and America are both, each in their own way, victims” and adding, “We share the same pain,” according to excerpts published by Al Jazeera.
It accuses Trump of concealing what Tehran describes as the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program and disputes U.S. claims about the effectiveness of the campaign against Iran.
The IRGC claims the United States and Israel failed to accomplish their objectives during the war.
“The United States and Israel expended thousands of bombs and missiles,” the letter says, according to Al Jazeera.
It claims that despite those attacks, the two countries “failed to achieve any of their declared objectives.”
Iran’s government has repeatedly denied seeking a nuclear weapon, while Trump has cited the threat of an Iranian nuclear weapon as a central reason for the U.S. military campaign.
The letter also attempts to redefine one of Iran’s most recognizable anti-American slogans.
“‘Death to America’ is a prayer for the eradication of the diabolical ruling elite whose seat of power is the White House,” the letter says.
It insists the slogan is directed at the U.S. political establishment rather than ordinary Americans.
The economic portion of the letter is equally blunt, predicting severe consequences for the United States.
“The US economy is on the precipice of collapse,” the letter claims, according to excerpts published by Iran International.
It accuses Trump of telling Americans that the economy is booming and warns that “the dam will break” and the economy will “implode.”
“The US economy will be hit by a massive economic earthquake that will affect the lives of all Americans,” the letter says.
The IRGC also portrays Trump as an untrustworthy leader.
Mohebbi separately called Trump an “inveterate liar” and accused him of telling Americans “big lies,” according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.
The letter closes by offering what it describes as an alternative relationship between the two countries.
“We can live together in peaceful coexistence,” it says, while calling on Americans to distance Washington from Israel and remove what it describes as “evil, deceitful, and violent politicians.”
The appeal comes as the Trump administration continues its military and economic pressure campaign against Tehran.
The Treasury Department on Tuesday announced sanctions against 10 individuals and entities in Iran, Hong Kong and Pakistan accused of supporting Iran’s military supply chain.
At the same time, the administration and Iranian intermediaries have continued efforts to explore a diplomatic path toward ending the seven-month conflict, with the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program among the central issues.
Mohebbi acknowledged that the letter may not change the Trump administration’s position, but said the intended audience was the American public.
“The American people are not knowledgeable about many developments,” he said. “We believe if they knew more, they would think differently and take other decisions,” according to Reuters.
The IRGC’s appeal marks a highly unusual attempt by Iran’s military leadership to address American voters directly while the United States and Iran remain locked in a major military confrontation.
