Small protests broke out across Iranian universities and cities this week, a rare display of dissent during an intensified crackdown amid the US-Israeli war with Iran.
On Monday, dozens of students protested outside the Allameh Tabatabai University in Tehran against Iran’s hijab laws, higher tuition fees and poor living conditions on campus. Videos showed protesters chanting “Death to tyranny, hijab and the morality police,” and pledging to continue their protests.
Footage also showed a member of the volunteer Basij paramilitary force – which is part of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – attempting to disperse demonstrators and reportedly threatening them.
Despite the students’ pledge to continue demonstrating, no protests were reported at the university Tuesday.
