A man suspected of shooting three of his coworkers at a business in Manassas, Virginia, Wednesday morning is dead after shooting himself, police say.
There was a statewide manhunt for 37-year-old Marvin Grant after the shooting injured three men at United Rentals on Wellington Road, Manassas City Police Chief Douglas Keen said. The victims are all in critical condition at a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
Hours later, a Virginia State Police trooper spotted Grant’s car on southbound Interstate 81 in Augusta County, police said.
The car pulled into the rest area at the 232 mile marker, where troopers tried to stop him. Grant got out of the car, then got back in and kept driving southbound on I-81, according to state police.
Troopers initiated a chase before Grant pulled over on the side of the road at the 227 mile marker and got out of the car with a gun, authorities said. State police said they brought in a negotiator.
The standoff lasted for about an hour before the suspect shot himself, state police said. Grant was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Virginia State Police said no troopers fired their weapons.
Three people were shot by their coworker in Manassas, Virginia, early Wednesday morning, according to police.
The shooting at United Rentals happened in a garage area of the business. Keen said many other employees were there at the time.
“Our working theory is that there was some kind of altercation that led to this,” Keen said.
Police told people to avoid the area and stay indoors as officers investigated. Officers blocked off access to Wellington Road and the Route 28 Bypass as they searched the area.
Students at nearby Jennie Dean Elementary School were redirected to Metz Middle School.
