The Saskatchewan Roughriders have traded for kicker Brett Lauther from the Ottawa Redblacks in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2027 CFL Draft, it was announced on Wednesday morning.
The 35-year-old has played well this season, connecting on 32-of-34 field goal attempts (94.1 percent) and 22-of-23 convert attempts (94.7 percent) over 12 regular-season games. He has the third-best field goal percentage in the CFL (min. 20 attempts) and has averaged 65.6 yards on kickoffs.
Lauther spent the previous seven seasons in Saskatchewan, winning the Tom Pate Memorial Award in 2023 and the Grey Cup in 2025.

Despite the championship, the native of Truro, N.S. struggled statistically last year.
In 2025, Lauther connected on 39-of-54 field goal attempts (72.2 percent), the worst mark of his long tenure in Riderville. He also made a league-worst 91.2 percent of his converts and missed a 39-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter of the Grey Cup. He was released by the team in February.
Over 130 career regular-season games, the Saint Mary’s University product has connected on 333-of-404 field goal attempts (82.4 percent) and 232-of-248 convert attempts (93.5 percent).
The Roughriders used rookie kicker Alex Hale to begin this season, and he made 24-of-32 field goal attempts (75.0 percent) and 32-of-35 convert attempts (91.4 percent) over 12 regular-season games before being demoted to the practice roster.
Dawson Hodge, a fellow rookie, has since gone five-for-five on field goal attempts and one-for-one on convert attempts with a long of 33 yards.
The CFL’s trade deadline is set for Wednesday at 4:59 p.m. EDT. One trade was executed on Tuesday, as the Montreal Alouettes acquired defensive lineman Julian Howsare from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Lauther and Howsare were both identified as possible trade deadline targets by 3DownNation on Monday.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-6) will host the Calgary Stampeders (7-8) on Friday, October 2 with kickoff scheduled for 9:30 p.m. EDT. The Roughriders are coming off a loss to B.C. that bumped them to third place in the West Division, while the Stampeders completed their two-game sweep of Ottawa.
The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on 620 CKRM in Regina and 770 CHQR in Calgary.
