Community members expressed disbelief after the assault and robbery of a beloved couple in Fells Point.

Baltimore police said a man assaulted and robbed a 76-year-old woman and her 60-year-old husband Tuesday morning. The couple had just left their breakfast date at the Broadway Market on Fleet Street.

Vikki Powers, the owner of Vikki’s Fells Point Deli inside the Broadway Market, has known the couple for decades. Powers told WBAL-TV 11 News that the assailant was in the market at the same time as the couple, and she believes he targeted them.

“We watched the playback video (inside the market), and as the (employee) was giving (the victim) his change, we saw the (suspect) pass them,” Powers told WBAL-TV 11 News. “He saw, then he went down and sat at the table, watched them and followed them out.”

City police confirmed that detectives are searching for a man who was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and black pants with white stripes down the sides. He was seen running away on South Regester Street. WBAL-TV 11 News obtained surveillance photos of a man matching the description.

Police said the man and woman were taken to a hospital and that the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries while the woman was critically injured.

Those who know the couple spoke with WBAL-TV 11 News.

“I mean, at this point, we’re just holding onto prayer and we are wishing her best. (Her husband) is by her bedside and we’re just hoping for justice,” Keya Little told WBAL-TV 11 News. “I met (the couple) about nine years ago from us frequenting Vikki’s Deli and I really developed a real friendship with them. They are the most sweet, loving, caring, generous people you could ever meet.”

“They’re some of the nicest people you could ever meet. They’re kind, they’re considerate, they’re passionate about the city, they’re passionate about what they do. They frequented the businesses in the community; they’re exactly what you want from a person who lives here,” said Gail Furman, a business owner who has known the couple for more than 30 years. “The community aches. It’s a resident we’re losing. It’s people who are out and about in this community all the time who support this community, who love living in Fells Point.”

Police have not announced any arrests as of Wednesday.

In a statement on Facebook, Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson said he was aware of the situation and is in close contact with BPD and the State’s Attorney’s Office.

“I’m thinking about both victims and their families, and about the fear an attack like this creates for everyone who walks these blocks every day. People should be able to move through their neighborhood without wondering whether they are safe,” Ferguson said.
