Ottawa police say they believe a man randomly stabbed and badly injured two people in the city’s downtown early Thursday.

Paramedics said the first call came around 2:50 a.m. on Rideau Street near Sussex Drive.

They said a woman was stabbed and critically injured, describing her condition when she arrived at hospital as life-threatening.

Police said in a news release that the victim boarded an OC Transpo bus to seek help.

Ottawa paramedics say two people were stabbed in what’s being described for now as two separate incidents near the west end of Rideau Street around 3 a.m. CBC’s Joseph Tunney reports from the scene.

Police said they were later called to the intersection of Daly Avenue and Waller Street just after 3 a.m., and were later seen focusing their attention on a section of sidewalk beside The Ottawa Mission.

A man had been seriously injured, paramedics said. Ottawa police said later Thursday that he was also in life-threatening condition.

Ottawa police said they arrested a 42-year-old man near the scene of the second stabbing and have charged him with several crimes including two counts of attempted murder and four assault charges.

Rideau was closed between Sussex and Dalhousie until around noon.
