LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – A historic deluge of rain pounded southeastern Nebraska Wednesday evening and night, leaving behind record-breaking rainfall totals and widespread flooding concerns across the region.

The Lincoln Airport recorded 6.15 inches of rain Wednesday, shattering the all-time daily rainfall record of 5.45 inches set more than a century ago on August 29, 1910. The downpour was part of a broader system that dumped between 1 and 4 inches across much of southern and southeastern Nebraska, with the heaviest bands dropping 4 to 8 inches from near Hebron through Seward and Saline Counties, into Lincoln and northwestern Lancaster County, and extending into the Omaha metro area.
The deluge pushed Lincoln’s September total to 11.49 inches — making it the wettest September on record and the fourth wettest month in the city’s recorded history.
Flooding Remains a Concern
Flood Watches remain in effect across southeastern Nebraska through 7 p.m. Thursday as rivers, creeks, and streams stay dangerously high.

Flood Warnings are in place across the region, and county and gravel roads continue to be in poor condition following Wednesday night’s heavy rain. Thursday will bring a transition toward drier conditions. Scattered light rain is possible through the morning and early afternoon, but little meaningful moisture is expected. Mostly cloudy to cloudy skies will gradually clear as high pressure approaches from the north and west.

Northeast winds will pick up through the morning, becoming breezy into the afternoon with sustained winds of 10 to 20 mph and gusts up to 30 mph possible. These winds will help keep temperatures fairly steady, with afternoon highs in the low to mid 60s for most of the area.

Dew points will fall from this morning’s elevated levels into the upper 40s by late Thursday night. The combination of falling dew points, clearing skies, and light winds will create one of the first widespread cool nights of the season, with lows dropping into the mid 40s across much of the state.

Friday will remain cool, with highs in the mid to upper 60s. Temperatures will warm slightly into the lower 70s for the weekend, but the overall pattern shows little to no rain chances over the next 10 days.
