SHERIFF: Two Lenoir County deputies shot after responding to scene where man was firing a gun at passersby

  • October 2, 2026

LENOIR COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Two deputies are in the hospital after being shot in Lenoir County.

That’s according to Lenoir County Sheriff Jackie Rogers during a press conference.

Rogers says that deputies were called to the 700 block of Jonestown Road between 11 and 11:20 a.m. for a report of a person shooting at passersby.

When deputies arrived on scene, a man came out of a home and shot at deputies, hitting one in the stomach. Deputies returned fire, and the man retreated into the home, according to the sheriff.

More deputies arrived on scene and ordered the man out of the home. Rogers says that the man fired again, hitting another deputy.

Both deputies were taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, where one was in surgery. Rogers described their injuries as non-life-threatening.

Rogers says law enforcement breached the home and went in with a drone and found the suspect in a bedroom.

The sheriff would not say the status of the suspect, only that the situation is under control and that there’s no threat to the public.

We asked if the suspect was dead, and the sheriff said he would not comment on that.

The SBI is at the scene investigating. We’re told there are 26 agents on scene.

Sheriff’s office and Kinston police armored vehicles were used during the situation.

Deputies with the Jones, Duplin, Greene, Nash, and Craven County sheriff’s offices responded to assist along with Alcohol Law Enforcement, the Department of Insurance, and the State Highway Patrol.

The public is asked to avoid Jonestown Road while the investigation continues.
