LAKE MARION, S.C. (WBTV) – A 69-car pileup reportedly left multiple people hurt on a bridge in South Carolina on Thursday.

The massive Oct. 1 pileup happened on the I-95 bridge over Lake Marion, on the southbound side going from Clarendon County into Orangeburg County. Sister-station WIS reported that thick fog drastically reduced visibility, giving drivers no time to stop.

Officials told WIS that 92 vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the crash — 69 of which were involved in the wreck. Of those 69, 54 were said to have been passenger vehicles, while 15 were tractor-trailers.

The wreckage caused such a mess that first responders reportedly had to walk to wrecked vehicles and use hand-held fire extinguishers to put out flames.

WIS reported at least two people were seriously hurt, including one who had to be airlifted to the hospital. No deaths were reported.

Crews worked for more than 15 hours to clear the wreckage.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol was investigating the crash.
