The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Axel Zizumbo. He is facing charges of concealed carry of a weapon violation, discharging firearm in town limits, and armed to the terror of the public.

Witnesses told WRAL that many students were on the street at the time of the shooting.

Hannah Mackin — a senior at the University of North Carolina — says she was outside a nearby restaurant when she heard gunshots.

“Everyone started screaming,” Mackin said. “We run into [the restaurant] … the entire place is just people screaming and hiding out. Eventually we go out and it’s flooded with cops.”

Mackin says she received a notification from Alert Carolina — UNC’s emergency alert system — around 9 p.m.

Police said there were no reports of injuries and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The investigation remains ongoing.
