SBI agent shot while searching for man in Reidsville; suspect charged, officials say

A North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) agent is receiving treatment after being shot by a man in Reidsville, according to the agency.

SBI officials said the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance after 38-year-old Marvin White allegedly fired at two deputies in the 800 block of Walker Street.

SBI agents responded and began searching the area. Investigators determined White may have entered a crawl space beneath a house.

As agents gathered additional equipment to search the crawl space, White allegedly came out and began shooting, hitting an SBI agent in the leg. Deputies said the agent then returned fire.

The agent was taken to a hospital and will undergo surgery soon to repair damage to his leg from the shooting. The injured agent is a 10-year SBI veteran who serves on the agency’s Special Response Team and works in the Northern Piedmont District.

No deputies were injured.

White was taken into custody. He is charged with:

1 Count of Attempted First-Degree Murder 1 Count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury 1 Count of assault with a firearm on law enforcement personnel

SBI said the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office also charged White with charges related to the original shots fired call this morning.

He is being held in the Rockingham County Jail under no bond.

Officials have not said what led to the incident.
