Amid the noise that Alex Scott is the man Chelsea want to finally replace the loss of Enzo Fernandez, the Bournemouth midfielder started his first game for England on Saturday night.

Scott remains a priority target for Chelsea, not least because of how close he is with Morgan Rogers. The midfielder was the subject of a £64m bid from the Blues in the summer, and his future remains in doubt.

With Chelsea unable to replace Fernandez at the last minute, Scott is a key target going into January. The midfielder’s contract at Bournemouth is due to expire in 2028, but even then, Scott could cost £100m.

Chelsea fans in awe as Scott shines for England on first start

At long last, Scott made his debut for England as a substitute against Czechia earlier this week. Then, on Sunday, Thomas Tuchel handed Scott the first start of his career in an England shirt. It went perfectly.

Scott lasted 70 minutes, as England smashed Croatia to win 7-0. The Three Lions were rampant, and while Scott didn’t get in on the action in terms of goals or assists, the midfielder was superb for England.

Scott proved he is one of the best midfield talents England have to offer, but it also proved to Chelsea that the Blues were after the right man: “He played well, and I love his awareness playing in midfield.”

Chelsea will regret why they didn’t sign him earlier because the amount they’ll spend will be huge and I think that’s what his club wanted.
A wonderful player, please Chelsea must sign him 💙

“Really want the guy. Covers ground and is very good on the ball likewise. The Caicedo-Scott pivot will feed generation,” was the reaction of another fan, who is clearly confident that Chelsea will do a deal.

One said: “We need him at Chelsea”, and another said “he was excellent” as England produced one of their finest results in years. It is unclear how much Chelsea would have to pay now, but it will be a lot.

Alex Scott has been outstanding for England against Croatia, looking composed, controlling the tempo, and carrying the ball with real purpose.

Where does Alex Scott fit into Chelsea’s side?

There is no doubt that other clubs are interested. Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the England star, while Jamie Carragher has suggested Andoni Iraola could form a reunion.

But at Real Madrid, would Scott start? At Liverpool, would he get into the side over the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai? At Chelsea, he is the exact midfielder the Blues are lacking, amid their current midfielders.

Next to Caicedo, Chelsea would have the defensive genius of the Ecuadorian and the technical ability and passing range of a deep-lying playmaker in Scott. The former Bristol City man suits Chelsea to perfection.
