According to a text from a consul official obtained by The Gazette, Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon had scheduled a meeting with the U.S. State Department in Washington in early March, though the meeting was ultimately cancelled.
“Just to confirm, PSPP did not/not go to Washington this week. No word on our part if/when it may be rescheduled,” Robert Sanders, then U.S. consul general in Montreal, texted a Quebec public official on March 3.

The text, one of several obtained by The Gazette, sheds more light on the extent of the sovereignist party’s plans to travel to Washington for a meeting with the U.S. State Department in the spring. As The Gazette reported on Saturday, the State Department undertook the courtesy of informing its consulates Quebec that the PQ was planning a trip to Washington and had requested a meeting.
