The homicide unit is investigating after a man was found dead inside a residence in the Lawrence Heights neighbourhood.

Toronto police say just before 8:30 a.m. Sunday, they received reports of a disturbance inside the fourth floor unit of a Toronto community housing building in the Lawrence Avenue West and Allen Road area.

Det. Sgt. Sajeev Nair said when police arrived, they found a man with “obvious traumatic injuries.” He was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

“There were people who fled from the unit and this includes the suspect,” said Nair. “I am seeking the public’s assistance in helping us to both identify the victim as well as locating the suspect.”

While no description was immediately available, Nair said there is a significant amount of video surveillance at the building and that it was “only a matter of time before we have a good image of the suspect.”

Nair could not say if the suspect and the victim were known to each other. He added that he doesn’t believe that the man who was killed lived in the building.

‘Sick to my stomach’

“This is another example of another death by gun,” said area Councillor Mike Colle, later adding he was not entirely sure as to how the man died.

“Unless people in Toronto and across the GTA wake up and understand that these gun criminals do not fear consequences, because they know if they commit a crime they’re going to be out on bail in a week. “

Investigators would not confirm that a gun was involved, saying only that the victim suffered “traumatic injuries.”

Colle says incidents like this destroy all the hard work done by the community to rebuild and build for the future.

“I was really dreading that this would happen because it’s been so good in the last five years, the community has been doing so much work, and this shatters all that good work. It makes me sick to my stomach and I really feel so badly that these gun criminals would ruin a community that’s trying to rebuild and build for the future and they come around and destroy everything.”

Colle says criminals don’t fear the consequences of their actions, once again advocating for a minimum 10 year sentence for anybody committing any crime with a gun and 20 years if it results in somebody’s death.

“There are no consequences now for murdering people. They get out on bail. They’re out on the streets, shooting again, killing again. It’s not a matter of more cops, it’s a matter of consequences and to send a signal to everybody that there’s no tolerance for people to commit gun crimes. Right now, they get off scot free.”
