The NFL confirmed on Monday that line judge Jeff Seeman has been suspended for two games after he was seen yelling at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride and referee Adrian Hill has been suspended for one game after his response to Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson inadvertently knocking him over, per The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero.
The suspensions came for “unprofessional conduct toward a player” and were handed down by NFL vice president of officiating Ramon George.
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was also in the news after receiving an unsportsmanlike penalty for cursing at an official, a decision that took him by surprise.
“I told him it was a terrible—I’m not going to say effing—call,” Vrabel told reporters. “I’ve said that 87 times since I’ve been a head coach. It was nothing derogatory. You’d have to ask him. I think he was a little sensitive.”
Seeman’s profanities toward McBride quickly went viral and earned a statement in response from NFLPA executive director J.C. Tretter.
“This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable,” he wrote on Sunday. “Players are consistently held accountable when roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard.”
Wilson, meanwhile, said the situation between Hill and himself was a misunderstanding and wasn’t a big deal.
“That was funny, honestly,” he told reporters after the game. “I ended up apologizing to him and explained the situation. He was cool about it. He understood what was going on. He just said he didn’t want us fighting, me and [Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II]. He said he was just trying to break us up.”
“I think Adrian’s a really good official and does a really good job,” Vikings’ head coach Kevin O’Connell added on Monday. “And I think that was just kind of a fast moment that happened and we can put it behind us hopefully.”
