Police are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage after a fatal crash in B.C. that may be connected to a stop in Banff earlier that night.

B.C. Highway Patrol said the crash occurred on Friday at around 11:10 p.m. on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park, just north of the Floe Lake trailhead.

Investigators say a black Nissan Maxima left the roadway and travelled down an embankment before coming to rest on its side.

The female driver was not seriously injured. A 23-year-old man from Invermere who was riding in the vehicle died at the scene.

Police are now trying to piece together the events leading up to the crash and are interested in information from between 9:30 p.m. and midnight on Highway 93 through Kootenay National Park.

They are looking for anyone who may have seen the occupants of the Nissan at restaurants, bars or liquor establishments in Banff around dinnertime on the night of the crash.

“Investigators believe there may be witnesses who stopped at the collision, or witnessed the events leading up to it, or the vehicle’s operation before the crash, but have not yet spoken to police,” said B.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Brett Reiben in a statement.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, has dashcam video, observed the vehicle being driven, or knows the driver and observed her behaviour in the hours before the crash is asked to contact BC Highway Patrol in Cranbrook at 250-420-4244 and reference file 2026-2873.
