A homicide investigation is underway in Pacific Beach after an unarmed security guard working at Crystal Pier was shot and killed on Monday, San Diego Police homicide detectives said.

San Diego Police said witnesses reported hearing gunshots at Crystal Pier in the 5400 block of Ocean Boulevard around 2 a.m. Several witnesses, workers and patrons of local bars, found a man on the ground and quickly rendered aid.

The victim, identified as a 31-year-old man, died shortly after being taken to a hospital, said SDPD Lt. Chris Leahy. Detectives confirmed he was an unarmed security guard working at Crystal Pier at the time of the shooting. The victim’s name is being withheld pending family notification.

Police said some people tried to chase after the shooter, but it’s unclear if the individual ran off or hopped in a car.

It is unknown what led to the shooting. SDPD was unable to provide any suspect description. Investigators also said they believe there is not an ongoing threat to the public.
