A six-year-old girl who was reported missing by Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) after being left with an associate to the girl’s father has been safely located in Mississauga.
DRPS Acting Sgt. Nick Gluckstein told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday that the girl was with her father over the weekend, who then left his daughter with his male associate.
She was safely located in Mississauga on Tuesday, CityNews confirmed. She had been spotted with the male associate on Sunday in Peel Region near where she was eventually located.
Gluckstein said after a press conference by Durham police, they were inundated with tips from the public and were able to locate her very quickly. She is being assessed by medical personnel to ensure she is healthy and uninjured.
The six-year-old girl was reported missing on Monday evening by her grandfather.
When asked why an Amber Alert was not issued, Gluckstein said, “We were still under the impression that she was still missing, and she was not taken by force. Based on that information, we didn’t meet the threshold for an Amber Alert.”
He added that if at any point that threshold was met, they would’ve issued an alert.
As of right now, the investigation is not being considered criminal, but police will be conducting interviews with the male associate and the father to determine if there is any criminal element and whether charges will be pursued.
The details of how she made it to Mississauga are also under investigation.
Last night, a six-year-old child was reported missing, and thankfully, due to the diligent work of our investigators, strong community awareness, and the support of the Child Search Network alert system, the child was safely located earlier this morning.
