A senior Trump Justice Department official directed the workforce to replace the term “AI” with “Super Intelligence” in their official communications — including in court filings “when appropriate” — adopting President Donald Trump’s preferred language.

Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter, referencing Trump’s Sept. 29 executive order directing federal agencies to adopt this terminology, relayed the instructions to DOJ employees Tuesday in a memo reviewed by Bloomberg Law.

In addition to citing the Trump order’s requirement that Super Intelligence be used “to the maximum extent permitted by law” in their government duties, McCotter said the policy extends to attorney filings in court.

The executive order, which also applies to all other federal departments, is part of Trump’s efforts to counter the increasingly negative public perceptions of artificial intelligence.

As explained in the order, “terminology used by the Federal Government should reflect the transformative capabilities of extraordinary technologies being pioneered by American innovators,” McCotter wrote.
