D.C. police arrested three 14-year-old boys and a 13-year-old boy for what they believe was a monthlong home invasion burglary spree in Northeast D.C.
Investigators say they’ve connected the teens to at least eight burglaries. In many of the cases, the teens were armed. In one case, police say a 14-year-old assaulted a victim with the intent to commit sexual abuse.
Police say the teens were after cash, phones and cars. In four cases, the teens stole cars, all of which were recovered in Southeast.
A victim on D Street NE said she was in the bathroom in her basement when she heard footsteps upstairs.
“I walked out of the bathroom and there was a kid with a gun standing there, told me not to move and then told me, ‘Go back in the bathroom.’ And then they were in the house for, I don’t know, maybe 15, 20 minutes tops,” she said. “They were looking, I think, for my car key and cash but didn’t take my computer or anything else, so, they found my car key and stole my car and left.”
“They had broken in through my pet door,” she added. “A small pet door.”
At one point, the victim said one of the teens opened the bathroom door and asked her to unlock her phone.
Days later, the teens returned and tried to burglarize her home again, putting a pistol in her boyfriend’s face. They stole his car keys but not the car, she said. They also damaged her doorbell camera and took $40 cash.
D.C. police have arrested several young people who they believe are responsible for two armed home invasions in Northeast in recent weeks. News4’s Megan McGrath reports on what police believe are a string of crimes committed by people under 18. More information is expected to be released soon.
Interim Chief of Police Jeffery Carroll told reporters all four teens did not take part in each burglary; they sometimes worked in groups of two or three. They entered through the rear of homes’ and often had a gun.
“It appears their conduct escalated,” he said.
Police released photos on Saturday of young people were then suspects. News4 blurred their faces because they were charged as juveniles.
The suspects were in juvenile court late Tuesday afternoon.
