Two people died when their small plane crashed near the Petaluma Municipal Airport Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The plane went down on the grounds of the Rooster Run Golf Course, adjacent to the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration said a preliminary report indicated that a Van’s RV-7A single-engine homebuilt plane with two people aboard crashed in a field shortly after taking off at about 10:45 a.m.
Petaluma Police Lt. Zilverio Rivera said when first responders arrived the plane was fully engulfed in flames.
“The fire was put out approximately three minutes after arrival from our fire department from the city, and after the fire was extinguised we noticed the two fatalities in the plane,” Rivera said.
The two people killed were not immediately identified. Police said E. Washington Street between Garfield Drive and Adobe Road was closed during the crash response and investigation.
The FAA said it and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the crash.
