Washington, DC — Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement marking the third anniversary of the October 7th terrorist attack in Israel carried out by Hamas.
“Three years ago today, Hamas terrorists committed an atrocity that forever scarred Israel and the Jewish people. We honor the hostages and their families, those murdered, including the Americans among them, and stand with those whose lives were forever changed. We also recognize the enduring anguish of Jewish communities in the United States and around the world. For those who lived through October 7 or lost loved ones, its trauma is not confined to an anniversary—it is lived every day. There can be no justification for October 7. I remain steadfast in my commitment to Israel’s security and its right to protect its people from terrorism.
“We also recognize the immense suffering, loss, and displacement Palestinian civilians have endured since October 7. Their lives and dignity matter. Acknowledging their suffering does not diminish the unique horror of October 7 or Hamas’ responsibility for its crimes. Our humanity requires us to mourn innocent lives and work to protect them.
“Honoring the victims requires more than remembrance. It requires sustained work to prevent such atrocities from happening again, to confront terrorism, protect civilians, and pursue diplomacy that enables Israelis to live in security and Palestinians to live in freedom and dignity. Neither people’s children should be condemned to inherit endless war. May the memory of those murdered on October 7 be a blessing. May their families find comfort, and may their memory strengthen our resolve to prevent further suffering and pursue peace.”
