Halifax Regional Police are responding to a threat made toward Halifax West High School.
According to a news release, police were told at approximately 12:25 p.m. AT that a threat had been received by the school located at 283 Thomas Raddall Dr.
“Students and staff that were outside of the building at the time the threats were received have been directed away from the school to a safe gathering point,” police said in the release.
Police are asking the public to avoid the area.
The Halifax Regional Centre for Education told CBC News that Halifax West received a phone call with a threat against the school during the lunch hour.
“Administrators immediately called police and placed the school in lockdown to ensure safety of students and staff,” a spokesperson said in an email.
Families asked not to come to the school
HRCE said police are at the school and students returning from lunch were redirected to a safe gathering point.
“At this time, we are asking families not to come to the school,” HRCE said. “Police are managing access to the area, and we will provide further information to families as it becomes available.”
While HRCE acknowledged the situation is “very concerning,” it said “we are taking every precaution to protect students and staff and are following the direction of police.”
