Cambridge, MA – Following a national search, the Board of Trustees of Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) today announced the appointment of Peter Shorett as the organization’s next President and CEO, effective January 2027.
Since joining BILH in 2019, Shorett has served in a number of senior leadership roles, including most recently as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Shorett has led the performance, growth, and strategy of the health system, during which time he was instrumental in the creation of the landmark cancer collaboration among Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians. Prior to joining Beth Israel Lahey Health, Shorett was a senior partner at Chartis, where he was one of the chief architects of the creation of BILH.
“Whether in research, education, or clinical care, BILH strives always for excellence in innovation and patient outcomes. It is an organization that carries out its work with a spirit of collaboration and an attitude of compassion. As someone who embodies these values and brings both a track record of accomplishments and a vision of the road ahead, Peter is ideally suited to build upon the impressive attributes of our young system and position it for future success,” said Ann-Ellen Hornidge, Chair of the BILH Board of Trustees.
Shorett steps into his role as CEO to lead a system whose foundation is strong, clinical and academic mission is world-class, leadership is experienced and deeply committed, and strategic direction is clear.
The system serves more than 2.1 million patients across eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. As the region’s second-largest employer, the system includes 39,000 employees and 5,300 physicians. Formed through the combination of academic medical centers, teaching and community hospitals, and specialty institutions, BILH has a strong platform for clinical excellence, research, education, and community-based care, with a significant commitment to primary care.
“The opportunity to lead the organization that I know and love – and that I helped bring into being – is one of the greatest privileges of my life,” said Shorett. “At BILH, we have a remarkable legacy of care, innovation, and commitment to our communities. I look forward to working alongside our outstanding teams to sustain the values that are the hallmarks of our system, while driving the transformation that is needed for our next chapter.”
In addition to Shorett’s role at BILH, he has forged trusted relationships with leaders at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and will oversee the ongoing integration of cancer care between the two organizations in the Longwood Medical Area over the coming years.
“It has been a pleasure to come to know Peter as a man whose prodigious intellect and operational capabilities are matched with the values of compassion and consistency. In everything he does, Peter strives for excellence, and I know that he will lead the system well in the next phase of our partnership. Our patients and families deserve nothing less,” said Benjamin L. Ebert, MD, PhD, President and CEO of the Dana- Farber Cancer Institute.
Raised in the Pacific Northwest, Shorett moved to the Boston area after earning his Bachelor of Arts at the University of California, Berkeley. He completed his Master of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School, with a focus on healthcare policy.
“I know that Peter will accelerate our strategic progress and clinical and academic advancement in the years ahead,” said Ron O’Hanley, Vice Chair of BILH Board of Trustees and Chairman and CEO of State Street. “All eyes look to Massachusetts for leadership in medicine and science. In Peter, I see a person who combines a natural optimism with the pragmatism to meet this challenging moment in healthcare.”
BILH is a values-driven organization whose purpose is to create healthier communities – one person at a time – through seamless care and ground-breaking science, driven by excellence, innovation and equity.
