MARBLE HILL, Manhattan (WABC) — A man in a vehicle was shot during an ICE operation in Upper Manhattan on Thursday, according to officials.
It happened just after 4 p.m. in the upper Manhattan neighborhood of Marble Hill.
Multiple shots were fired during what was believed to be an ICE operation, according to a city official. They say the person was in the vehicle at the time of the shooting, and a child, believed to be an approximately 5-year-old boy, was in the back seat. He was unharmed.
At the time of the shooting, ICE agents were attempting to detain a person being investigated for ties to migrants involved the shooting of an off-duty customs officer in Fort Washington Park in July 2025.
Two Dominican nationals involved in the case were sentenced in federal court earlier this week, while state charges are still pending.
ICE later released a statement saying they were “conducting a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx, New York, to arrest a criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic with a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny, and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession.”
They confirmed that an ICE officer discharged his weapon, injuring the man.
The NYPD said the shooting involved federal law enforcement agents, and that members of the NYPD were not involved in the incident, and was not on scene at the time of the shooting.
The man who was shot was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently conscious and receiving medical attention, according to police.
At a press conference hosted by the New York Immigration Coalition, Congressman Adriano Espaillat said he spoke with the family of the man shot and they confirmed the child is in the family’s custody. The congressman said ICE agents did not allow him to see the man in the hospital when he went to see him.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene after they said they heard several gunshots ring out Thursday evening.
“I only heard about four shots, but I thought it was a car backfiring,” one woman said. “I thought no, that’s definitely gunshots, so I ran to my window and all of a sudden I heard cops running, not walking down the street, and followed shortly there after by more cops, and then more cops and ICE agents. Everybody was running. I think it’s horrifying.”

City officials have been told ICE has been using a nearby Target parking lot on 225th Street as a staging area.
ICE recently set a daily target of 3,000 arrests per day nationally, up from 2,000, sources told ABC News.
Lawmakers and immigration activists react to shooting
The shooting has sparked swift reaction from local politicians, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The mayor said he called the president and will demand an end to ICE actions when they speak, saying, “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities. Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery. Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children. Abolish ICE.”
Gov. Hochul is calling for “full transparency” from federal authorities.
“I’ve been briefed on this afternoon’s shooting involving federal law enforcement agents in the Bronx,” Hochul said in the statement posted to social media. “We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident. New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who attended the press conference hosted by the New York Immigration Coalition, released a statement saying he hears the fear anger of the Marble Hill community, and also “hear their resolve, their commitment to stand by our immigrant neighbors under attack.”
He added, “They belong in our city – ICE does not.”
The shooting has also prompted responses from city immigration activists.
“ICE’s violent tactics are a clear danger to all New Yorkers, as today’s shooting in a residential neighborhood demonstrates. This incident is another reminder of the unchecked, rampant violence ICE has been spreading throughout our communities,” said Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition.
