DOVER, DE (WPVI) — Police in Dover, Delaware are investigating a deadly double shooting near Delaware State University.
It happened around 9:19 p.m. Saturday in the Dover Commons shopping center parking lot in the 1200 block of North Dupont Highway.
According to police, prior to the shooting thousands of students and visitors were attending Delaware State University’s homecoming events and were required to end events and leave campus at approximately 6 p.m., resulting in large crowds gathering at several nearby shopping centers and other locations.
At the time of the shooting, more than 50 officers, from multiple departments, were already working in the area to manage crowds and respond to large disturbances that included multiple fights, calls for disorderly behavior and for shots fired at multiple locations.
Officers were able to locate a 21-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.
While rendering aid to the first victim, they also located a second victim, who was identified as 22-year-old Nasir Cox of Philadelphia.
According to police, the Route 13 corridor between Delaware State University and several nearby shopping centers was completely gridlocked with vehicle and pedestrian traffic, which would have delayed emergency medical response.
Therefore, officers immediately transported the victims to the hospital, where 22-year-old Cox succumbed to his injuries.
The 21-year-old victim remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact police.
