Discussions have moved beyond preliminary evaluations to explore integrating the advanced hardware into Morocco’s existing defense structure, which currently relies on NATO-standard equipment such as the American MIM-104 Patriot system.
As reported by Military Watch Magazine, the Israeli missile shield is “designed to intercept tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, medium- to long-range rockets and unmanned aerial vehicles“.
Should a contract be signed, Morocco would mark the second international customer for the system following Finland.
Jointly developed by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the U.S. firm Raytheon, David’s Sling provides an intermediate defensive layer between short-range air defenses and exo-atmospheric ballistic missile interceptors.
The core interceptor missile, called the Stunner, incorporates a dual-mode tracking system featuring radar and infrared guidance to ensure high resistance against electronic jamming and decoy tactics.
Adding David’s Sling would create a higher-tier aerial defense umbrella for Morocco, building upon its previous acquisitions of Israeli Barak MX and Spyder air defense technologies.
According to Military Watch Magazine, “Discussions have reportedly progressed beyond an initial assessment of the system” as defense ties between the two nations continue to grow.
Algeria maintains Russian defense ties amid North African regional dynamics
As Morocco strengthens its military partnership with Israel and Western allies, neighboring Algeria continues to maintain a strategic defense relationship with Russia.
Morocco and Algeria have been noted to differ in opinions regarding security and territorial integrity.
For example, while Morocco continues to seek sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara, Algeria has consistently supported the Polisario Front.
Algeria provides the separatist movement with both political and military backing including ammunitions to defend itself against the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces.
Military Watch Magazine revealed that “Algeria remains the only major state in the Arab world outside the Western sphere of influence,” relying largely on non-Western suppliers for its defense needs.
Russian armed forces previously gathered significant operational data on David’s Sling while stationed in Syria, which included analyzing a relatively intact interceptor missile recovered in 2018.
Military watch magazine also pointed out that “an unexploded surface-to-air missile which landed in Syria relatively intact in 2018 and was subsequently sent to Russia for study.”
Due to the close military cooperation between Moscow and Algiers, Algeria could gain key technical insights into the capabilities and potential weaknesses of the Israeli missile system.
