Israeli media reported on Monday that one person had died in the north of country following the detonation of what is believed to be an unexploded bomb.
Several others were injured, the Israeli ambulance service Magen David Adom said on Monday afternoon. Eight people had to be treated at the scene for serious and moderate injuries.
Israeli media, citing the ambulance service, reported that one person was pronounced dead. A total of 19 people were injured in the incident near the Lebanese border.
Several Israeli media outlets reported that the victims were schoolchildren and teachers who had been hiking in the area.
The Israeli army said the circumstances were being investigated, adding that soldiers were providing assistance at the scene, and Air Force helicopters were on their way.
Nothing is yet known about the origin of the suspected unexploded ordnance. It is also unclear whether it is, for example, a remnant of the war with Hezbollah.
One day after the Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7, 2023, the militia began firing rockets from southern Lebanon, primarily at northern Israel.
Hezbollah’s leadership justified the attack as a show of support for Hamas. The Israeli military responded with air strikes and ground operations in the neighbouring country.
Despite a ceasefire that is technically in force between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah, the conflict continues.
