French police have arrested a 14-year-old boy accused of carrying out a rare shooting at a middle school, injuring the principal and a teacher. No students were hurt in the Monday morning shooting at the Joseph Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, east of Marseille, per the AP. Police in the Bouches-du-Rhône region of southern France said the suspect is a student at the school and was carrying a gun when taken into custody. His motive is unknown. There was no immediate indication that the shooting was linked to widespread high school protests in France over school conditions.
The suspect allegedly entered the school with a 12-gauge shotgun, shooting the 53-year-old principal in the leg and the 37-year-old teacher in the thigh, before being restrained by a staff member, reports the BBC. Aubagne Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari said students were “immediately confined and placed in safety,” though he described the psychological impact of the incident as “immense,” per the Independent.
