Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss the team’s Week 6 game against the Carolina Panthers with a blood clot in his calf, the team announced Thursday.

Hurts first visited the training room on Oct. 8 for treatment on his calf the week after a loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the Eagles said in a statement. The team performed an ultrasound scan Saturday “out of an abundance of caution” after Philadelphia’s flight to London for its Week 6 game, when a superficial blood clot was discovered.

Hurts still played every snap in the Eagles’ 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, completing 21 of 40 passes for 220 yards. He had his fewest rushing attempts of the season, running only twice for 2 yards.

“Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that [Hurts] could safely play,” the statement read, adding that Hurts “played without limitation.”

Hurts received treatment on his calf Monday and Tuesday, according to the team, and participated fully in practice Wednesday. A follow-up ultrasound Wednesday night revealed he had a small blood clot, however.

Hurts “will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority,” the statement read.

Hurts, 28, led the Eagles to an NFL championship in February 2025. He was named Super Bowl 59 MVP after he threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another.

This season, he has started all five of Philadelphia’s games, completing 57.8% of his passes with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He has also run the ball 23 times for 107 yards and one more score.

After having won their first two games, the Eagles have lost three straight. To make matters worse, Hurts is far from the only player on offense dealing with an injury or medical issue.

Starting running back Saquon Barkley and starting receiver DeVonta Smith both didn’t practice Wednesday because of hamstring injuries. Guard Landon Dickerson and receiver Dontayvion Wicks were also limited participants because of knee and hamstring injuries, respectively.

Right tackle Lane Johnson, widely considered to be one of the best players at his position, announced his retirement this month, citing personal and family priorities as he chose to focus on his mental health.

Philadelphia has struggled mightily on offense this season. Entering Week 6, the Eagles rank second to last in total yards per game, 28th in passing yards per game and 29th in points per game.

Philadelphia’s backup quarterback is Tanner McKee, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

McKee has yet to appear in a game this season. In six career appearances, including two starts, he has completed 54 of 88 passes for 597 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He has a career passer rating of 95.7.
