The provincial government is stepping up its efforts to catch people who illegally pass school buses.

It’s launching a four-month pilot in Corner Brook, Gander, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador West, Marystown and Paradise at the start of this school year.

One bus in each of those municipalities will be equipped with a camera which will activate when the stop arm is extended.

Fines for passing a school bus with the arm extended range from $500 – $1200.

Jenoptik Smart Mobility Solutions will be responsible for the installation, operation and maintenance of the devices, as well as issuing the tickets.
