If you’re applying to become a permanent resident (PR) in Canada, you’ll soon have the option to take a different language test.

Those applying for PR status in Canada will be able to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Essentials test as one of the accepted language tests.

On Aug. 21, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) announced that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) added the organization to its list of designated language testing organizations. According to the release, the added test option will be available for “permanent economic immigration applications.”

This may include applications under multiple programs such as Express Entry, which includes Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and Canadian Experience Class (CEC), as well as Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) and the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP). Daily Hive Canada has reached out to IRCC for further details.

“IRCC is not yet accepting TOEFL Essentials scores and will update its website once acceptance begins,” reads the release. “In the meantime, ETS is working with IRCC on the steps leading up to acceptance and will share timing and test location details once confirmed.”

Currently, applicants can choose from several approved language tests: the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and Pearson Test of English (PTE).

According to the release, TOEFL Essentials is “a practical, real-world test for today’s immigrants.”

The test is divided into four language skills, including listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The Internet-based test (iBT) is task-based and will take place at a secure test centre. The test can be completed in around 1.5 hours.

Omar Chihane, global general manager of TOEFL at ETS, said, “Now that TOEFL Essentials is approved for Canadian economic immigration, test takers have a trusted, high-quality option designed for those building a life in Canada, while TOEFL iBT continues to serve as the gold-standard path for those who want to study there.”
