She was spotted in the water around 7 a.m. near 70 Arts Circle Drive, officials said.
An unresponsive woman was pulled from the lake by members of the Evanston Fire Department, who attempted life-saving measures, officials said. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Northwestern officials confirmed she was a student at the university, and she was not from the Evanston area.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified her as 19-year-old woman Saba Hani Alkaabi, who lived on campus.
“Lake Michigan can be dangerous. Hazard warnings and signs prohibiting swimming and fishing are posted along Northwestern University’s lakefront property,” an update from Evanston city officials read in part. “Evanston Police urge people to follow posted warnings, check lake conditions before approaching the water and follow instructions from city or university officials to stay out of the water and off break walls and rocks.”
No further information about the death was available as authorities continue to investigate.
