A TV reporter’s routine flood coverage turned into a story of its own in Australia. Will Murray of Australian broadcaster ABC dove into the water along with a bystander to rescue a man from his sinking vehicle, reports Reuters. The driver near Brisbane had made the unfortunate decision to try to make it through high water, but his vehicle stalled and quickly began sinking. That’s when Murray and bystander Daniel Hainey entered the water and began swimming toward him.
“When we got to the car, we tried to open the closest door—no luck—then got on the back of the car with the thought to break the back window,” recounts Murray. “I thought to try the passenger side rear door first and put my feet against the car and pulled as hard as I could, and with some luck the door swung open.” Camera operator Liz Pickering filmed the rescue: See video here. “The pair of them definitely saved that man’s life,” she says.
