The man accused of stabbing and killing Surrey’s Tori Dunn during a home invasion in her Port Kells home in June of 2024 has been found guilty of second-degree murder.
On Wednesday night (Oct. 21) in New Westminster Supreme Court, jurors returned with the guilty verdict for Adam Troy Mann, 42, after deliberating for several hours. Defence and Crown attorneys gave their closing statements earlier Wednesday, after which BC Supreme Court Justice David Layton instructed the 12 jurors about their deliberation.
Dunn, 30, was stabbed four times when Mann entered the home she shared with boyfriend Trafford Wace on June 16, 2024.
Mann previously testified he found a kitchen knife and cellphone — both of which had Dunn’s DNA on them — lying by the side of the road near her home that same night.
A sentence of life imprisonment is mandatory with second-degree murder cases in Canada; the judge must also set a minimum parole ineligibility period between 10 and 25 years.
Mann will next appear in court Oct. 29.
Dunn’s father, Aaron, who was at the trial every day along with several other of her family members and Wace, said he was “pleasantly overwhelmed with joy” when the verdict was read.
“It’s been been two-and-a-half years … I’m just happy really happy to have it behind us. It’s quite an ordeal sitting in in court like that when the person that you’re talking about is your daughter,” he said Thursday morning (Oct. 22).
He and most of Dunn’s family don’t live in B.C., he noted, so they’ll be making plans to travel back to their respective homes across Canada.
He hopes the public and media understand what a beautiful person Tori was, inside and out, and how much she is missed and loved by her family and friends.
“(The verdict) doesn’t bring her back, but at least the justice system gets to right a wrong. We’re hoping to find out where our system keeps breaking down and promote some change,” Aaron said. “So another family doesn’t have to go through burying burying a child … help make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
