Toronto police say a girl under 18 is in custody after a woman in her late 80s was stabbed inside a residence in Scarborough.

Emergency crews responded to a home on Hallbank Terrace near Sheppard Avenue East and McCowan Road around 1:40 p.m. on Friday.

Police initially said the woman suffered serious injuries, but in an update, confirmed that her injuries are life-threatening.

Investigators say the suspect was taken into custody a short distance away.

The woman and the girl lived in the same residence, but police did not share the relationship between the suspect and the victim.

The investigation is ongoing.
