Nobody Wants This is back for a third season of dancing around the real issues of contemporary Judaism in America so that maybe Kristen Bell’s convert character Joanne can learn about hamantaschen rather than have one political conversation. That doesn’t mean, however, that the show’s creator and stars have been able to avoid the same pitfalls as their characters. Last summer, while promoting the second season of Nobody Wants This, Adam Brody, who plays “hot rabbi” Noah in the show, said to Amanda Seyfried during their “Actors on Actors” joint interview that he was glad the show was a “safe, celebratory space” for Jewish people during an otherwise tough time. In a GQ interview this year, however, Brody was a little more firm in his beliefs around the political climate as it exists outside of the confines of his show. “Put me down as thinking it’s a genocide. Put me down as wanting a free Palestine,” he said.

That was almost a month ago, and it’s been crickets from the cast and crew of Nobody Wants This since he said that. On the upcoming episode of Amanda Hirsch’s Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Nobody Wants This co-creator Erin Foster addressed Brody’s comments, saying that the set of their show was “very similar to dinner tables around the world where people are having debate and discussion and disagreeing.” Foster went on to add that Nobody Wants This “has always been and always will be a love letter to Judaism. It’s because of how beautiful of an experience I’ve had becoming Jewish and being a Jewish person, and sitting here right now at this time in the world where there is almost zero positive representation of Jewish people, I think it’s so important to have that.” But, of course, we do have positive representation of Jewish people in the perpetual sex symbol that is Adam Brody, both in and outside of the context of Nobody Wants This, so while Foster’s contribution to the landscape is noted, we’re not in so dire a drought as she perceives.
