An 87-year-old Queens County man has died following a collision between a car and a garbage truck in Belfast, P.E.I., on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to the collision on Route 207 at about 2:50 p.m, RCMP said in a news release Friday.

Police say initial indications suggest the car failed to brake and struck the back of the garbage truck, which was travelling in the same lane.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, while the two men working in the garbage truck were not injured, police said.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene, and Route 207 was closed for several hours while investigators examined the collision.

RCMP are working with the provincial coroner’s office as the investigation continues.
