Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu summoned Police Commissioner Danny Levy on Saturday to an unusual meeting on police readiness ahead of Election Day, after the police chief had refused to attend a meeting on the same subject with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Thursday.

Last week, Ben-Gvir convened a meeting and summoned the Commissioner Levy alongside other senior officials. Senior law enforcement officials criticized the planned meeting and questioned its professional merit, citing in part Ben-Gvir’s candidacy in the election and concerns that he would exploit the meeting to advance his own political goals.
“There is no need whatsoever for Ben-Gvir to be familiar with police preparations, and there is concern that he will use what he hears there for his political needs,” a senior law enforcement official told Haaretz before the meeting.
Following Haaretz’ report, Levy and other senior officials, including the head of the Investigations and Intelligence Department, announced that they would not attend the meeting. Ultimately, the heads of the Operations Directorate and the Police Operations Division did attend, with Levy authorizing them to provide only a brief overview.
