James Carville gave Democrats a somewhat bleak prediction on Friday, saying that even if the party wins seats in the midterms, it might have to settle for embarrassing President Donald Trump rather than passing legislation.
“Well, first of all, Congress can’t do anything. I mean, he’ll veto everything. What they need to do is pick out five things and vote on them that he won’t sign,” Carville told CNN’s Brianna Keilar on Friday.
A number of polls and experts forecast a major blue wave approaching the upcoming midterm elections as Republicans face major campaign challenges due to Trump’s growing unpopularity caused by his handling of the economy and the war in Iran.
However, even if Democrats win both the Senate and House, Trump said he would use his power to veto and limit the party’s chances of passing major legislation.
He told reporters this week, “I think the Republicans are going to win — but if there was gridlock, what happens is I veto everything, and then the Democrats come and want to make a deal.”
Carville recommends Dems at least try to pass a package on the first day they come into session, including banning stock trading for congressional members, raising the minimum wage, and ending the war in Iran.
“Now they can pass it. Trump won’t sign it, but you can’t govern a congressional party — in effect, can’t govern — if the executive can have veto power and the judicial, the Supreme Court, is rigged against you,” Carville said. “But do everything you can to put him on the spot. Do everything you can to embarrass him, and by the way, investigate the hell out of his corruption.”
