NEWPORT Ore. (KPTV) – Crews are battling a large structure fire on the Newport Bayfront that broke out Sunday morning, forcing evacuations in the area.
Authorities say the fire was reported just before 9 a.m. at 213 Southwest Bay Boulevard – home to a Pacific Seafood plant on the historic Newport Bayfront.
According to the City of Newport, about 30-40 people were at work in the building at the time, but all were able to get out safely.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital and treated for exhaustion.
Evacuations
Level 3 “Go Now!” and Level 2 evacuations were issued for a large part of the waterfront area due to potential ammonia contamination from the plant. However, at about 3:30 p.m., officials said crews had been able to mitigate the risks of a tank leaking ammonia and reduced the evacuation zone to the area of just a couple blocks due to smoke.
The updated evacuation map is available here.
Authorities said the main concern now is toxic smoke created by the fire.
An evacuation shelter has been moved from Sam Case Elementary to Atonement Lutheran Church, located at 2315 North Coast Highway in Newport. Pets are welcome.
