Boynton Beach provides sandbags as king tides flooding threatens homes
The city of Boynton Beach is offering free sandbags to residents as king tides threaten to cause flooding in the area, with a coastal flood warning set to take effect at midnight.
Since Sunday afternoon, city officials have made sandbags available for self-service pickup at the south parking lot of Harvey E. Oyer Junior Park at 2010 North Federal Highway.
King tides occur when the gravitational pull of the moon and sun combine to create high tides, often flooding streets. While common in Palm Beach County, the flooding can surprise newcomers to the area.
Residents are urged to avoid driving or walking through standing water and to use alternate routes around flooded roadways.
