Mark Sutcliffe promises to build on foundation of first term

When Mark Sutcliffe was elected four years ago he promised to ease tensions on council, restore confidence in OC Transpo and find fiscal savings to keep Ottawa affordable.

His critics spent much of the last year arguing Sutcliffe was not ambitious enough.

But voters seem to disagree.

A Sutcliffe win effectively promises a continuation of the collaborative leadership style he brought to the council table and the compromises I’ve often seen from the media row.

This time he won’t be surrounded by newbies.

Whether incumbent councillors will be more vocal in their desires, or critical of the mayor’s plans remains to be seen.

Either way, Sutcliffe told me that residents should expect no change in his leadership style.

At a mid-campaign one-on-one, the mayor looked into the crystal ball and said by the end of his second term the city will have eliminated youth homelessness and have a much better transit system.
