The U.S. military has spent more than $47 billion on its war against Iran, with replacing expended munitions accounting for the largest share of the costs, according to Pentagon data reviewed by Reuters.

The total is more than 25% higher than the Defense Department’s July estimate and includes more than $29 billion for munitions replacement and more than $6 billion to replace military equipment.

An Oct. 16 assessment by U.S. Central Command, shared with Congress and obtained by The Hill, also identified nearly $12 billion in additional military operating expenses. The Air Force accounted for $7.6 billion in costs involving deployed personnel, airlift, base operations, communications, and transportation in the region.

The figures did not clearly account for the expense of repairing U.S. military installations damaged by Iranian missile and drone attacks.

The expenditures come as President Donald Trump considers further military action against Iran following the midterm elections, despite predicting that the conflict will soon end.

Speaking Tuesday at a rally in Corpus Christi, Texas, Trump said the United States was “making an absolute fortune because of the situation” in the Middle East. He also predicted the Iran war would “end very soon.”

U.S. Central Command has developed options for additional strikes against Iranian targets if the White House authorizes another round of attacks, The Hill previously reported.

The conflict began in February and has disrupted energy markets.

Moody’s Analytics estimates that the war has cost the average American household $2,000 so far.
