Ontario Provincial Police say they are no longer asking people to shelter in place along Highway 9 in the Caledon area after officers responded to an incident in the area involving “potentially armed individuals” Saturday morning.

The shelter in place covered Highway 9 between The Gore Road, Patterson Side Road, Finnerty Street and Humber Station Road in Caledon, OPP said in a news release Saturday. People outside that area were asked to avoid travelling there until further notice.

Just after 11:30 a.m., police said on X that the shelter-in-place request had been lifted and roads in the area had reopened. They said there is no longer a threat to public safety.

A heavy police presence remains in the area, police said.

Police did not immediately provide more details about the incident in the area that prompted the shelter-in-place request.

“We recognize the emotional impact that a shelter-in-place advisory can have,” the OPP said in a news release late Saturday morning. “The OPP thanks the public for their cooperation and vigilance.”
