A training exercise at a US Marine base in Japan turned fatal this week. The 3rd Marine Division says one of its Marines died on Tuesday following what it described as a “training incident” at Camp Schwab in Okinawa, a key American military hub in the western Pacific, per NBC News. The Marine’s name is being withheld until at least 24 hours after the family is notified. A spokesperson wouldn’t say if anyone else had been hurt, or whether the Marine had died at the scene or in the hospital, reports ABC News.

The Jerusalem Post also notes that there’s no word on what exactly the incident entailed or a cause of death. Officials said the circumstances are under investigation and offered condolences to the Marine’s relatives and friends, per NBC. Okinawa, which the US administered after World War II until 1972, still hosts about 80,000 American personnel and family members, including roughly 30,000 active-duty troops, with Marines forming the largest share.
