Vice President JD Vance criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of Iran and urged President Donald Trump to seek a deal instead of resuming military strikes, Axios reported Wednesday.

The report came after Vance blamed the war in Iran for Republicans’ midterm election losses. “The reason we lost is the war,” he wrote on X.

Citing sources familiar with the discussions, Axios reported that Vance had led a faction of Trump’s inner circle urging the president to strike a deal with Iran to end the conflict.

Vance privately accused Netanyahu of “being wrong on everything” about Iran, the outlet said, citing sources.

Vance had also warned Trump that the war was unpopular and could cost Republicans the election, a concern shared by other officials in the president’s orbit, according to the report.

Trump, however, remained inclined to resume the war as Netanyahu pressed him to do so, but ultimately held off. Despite objections from his top advisers, Trump also endorsed Netanyahu in Israel’s election.

Trump acknowledged Wednesday that the war likely contributed to Republicans’ midterm losses by driving up gasoline prices, but defended his decision to launch military strikes on Iran.

“I think it’s largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short term,” Trump said when asked by a reporter about Vance’s comments on X.
